Since the Supreme Court decided in June 2015, many same-sex couples have gotten married. Unfortunately, many of these couples will also experience divorce and without a prenuptial agreement.

Getting married is one of the highlights of your life. The man or woman you love has said yes and you are over the moon happy. One thing that may come up is what to do about a prenuptial agreement. In the past, only the rich and famous needed prenuptial agreements because their marriages were often seen as tenuous and they had a lot to protect. Now, lots of people who are in the middle class are getting “prenups” too because it helps them plan for the future.

When a billionaire hedge fund manager and his wife end up in court again over their prenuptial agreement, it makes the news. Kenneth Griffin and his wife Anne Dias Griffin will return to court this week to try to settle their disagreements over their prenup.

You may think that couples who sign a prenup are already being more realistic than couples that don’t, admitting that many marriages end and that they want to have paperwork in place to protect themselves if that happens. This is true, but it’s important to remember that even those who sign prenups can fall victim to unrealistic expectations that can cost them.
